Deputy Commissioner of Police Calvin Brutus on Friday while in Essequibo, Region 2, told a gathering of more than one thousand persons that the Zara Computer Centers will be going the extra mile for students who are attending the facilities across the country.
Brutus was delivering the feature address to a graduating batch at the Zara Computer Center which is located at the Richard Faikall Police College at Suddie, Essequibo, Region 2 where 801 persons graduated.
“Our next step for ZARA is to aid those who are sitting the National Grade 6 examinations at these centers and importantly, in the new month to come September we will be looking to help in terms of lessons and assistance to do SBAs and in all aspects, assistance to put it together, assistance to compile it and have it ready for submission. This will be done in five subject areas, Math, English, Social Studies, Informational technology, and EDPM” Deputy Commissioner Calvin Brutus told the gathering.
The Zara Computer Centers are housed in police facilities in regions 4, 6, 2, and 10. There are several other centers that are planned for other regions. The first ZARA Computer Center was established back in 2013 by the Jay and Slyvia Sobhraj Foundation.
In the course overview, the 801 persons who graduated were trained on 35 different courses which included 10 foundations, 5 advances, 1 PC repairs and maintenance, 1 Web design, 13 summer programs, and 3 youth groups.
Since the opening of the Zara Center at Richard Faikall Police College, training and graduations were done for just under five thousand persons.
Assistant Superintendent Telson Hanover who worked at all the centers over the years and was recently appointed coordinator for the Zara Centers said that the graduation of the more than 800 persons was a moment of personal pride for himself.
“This makes me very impressed and emotional to know the (Guyana Police) force can provide much-needed training in Guyana irrespective of the ages. I am flabbergasted that more than 650 graduating here today are youths, this tells me that the future is in good hands. One of the greatest decisions you could have ever made in life is to ensure in IT classes at the Richard Faikall Police College Zara and a greater one is to have successfully completed it” ASP Handover told the graduating group.
The Force Training Officer Deputy Superintendent Rovin Dass was also present at the occasion and spoke briefly. He too spoke of the number of persons who graduated on Friday and regarded it as a landmark achievement.
“It’s a commendable thing for the parents who allowed the children to be here to have this opportunity. We are hoping that these engagements can aid in rebuilding the image of the force to show a more people-oriented and service-oriented organization” The Force Training Officer stated.
The ZARA Computer Centers are equipped with modern facilities which are open to the general public. The genesis of the centers started when the Sobhraj Family out of New York visited Guyana and offered to assist the Guyana Police Force in enhancing its image and relationship with the Members of the Public.
The Sobhraj Family hails from Guyana but has been living in the United States for years but continues to contribute to several projects in their motherland.
