Thailand school shooting leaves nine dead

Thailand is mourning after a deadly shooting at a school outside Bangkok left eight victims dead and more than 20 people injured, in one of the country’s most serious mass-casualty shootings in recent years.

The attack occurred on Friday, August 7, at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, just north of Bangkok. Authorities said the suspected shooter was a 14-year-old male student at the school.

According to Thai police and international reports, the teenager first fatally shot his grandparents at their home before travelling to the school, where he opened fire. The suspect later died by suicide, bringing the overall death toll to nine, including the shooter.

Among those killed at the school were a teacher and students. A 12-year-old girl who had been critically wounded in the shooting later died in hospital, causing the confirmed death toll to rise. More than 20 other people were reported injured in the attack.

The shooting has prompted renewed concerns over firearm access and security in Thailand, a country with one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia.

Police have also been investigating the teenager’s background. Authorities said witnesses indicated that he had shown an interest in firearms for as long as one to two years. A teacher had previously confiscated a BB gun from him after he brought it to school, according to police. Investigators are also examining reports that he had been consuming violent material online.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

In response to the tragedy, the Thai government has announced plans for stronger security measures at schools and tougher enforcement of existing firearm regulations. Proposed measures include increased security personnel, metal detectors, emergency-response drills, improved weapons screening and mental-health assessments.

The tragedy has also renewed national debate over Thailand’s gun laws and the accessibility of firearms. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has called for stricter enforcement against carrying firearms in public.

The attack is being described as Thailand’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly four years, adding to growing public concern about gun violence and the protection of students and teachers in the country’s schools.
