Sophia Man Gets 14 years for 2021 Fatal Stabbing

November 23 2024 -Randy Willings, a 33-year-old mason and father of three from Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was on Thursday sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment on a manslaughter conviction.

The verdict was delivered by a jury last month at the Demerara High Court, presided over by Justice Jo Ann Barlow. The deceased in the matter is 37-year-old Kevin Smith.

Initially charged with murder, Willings was acquitted of the more severe charge but found guilty of the lesser offence.

State Counsel Mikel Puran prosecuted the case, while Willings was represented by attorney Kiswana Jefford.

The incident occurred on February 8, 2021, at Smith’s ‘C’ Field Reserve Dam, Sophia home where an altercation between Willings and Smith turned violent.

Armed with a knife, Willings stabbed the 37-year-old handyman three times—in the chest, abdomen, and above the left knee—before fleeing the scene. Smith succumbed to his injuries shortly after emergency responders arrived.

Following his arrest, Willings was initially charged with murder and remanded to prison.

The case was first heard by Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where a preliminary inquiry established sufficient evidence to send the matter to the High Court for trial.

The trial spanned several days and culminated in the jury’s manslaughter conviction.

In sentencing, Justice Barlow, among other things, emphasised the need for accountability while addressing the broader societal issue of escalating violence in conflict resolution.

She also underscored the devastating impact of Smith’s death on his family.

To aid in his rehabilitation, Justice Barlow ordered that Willings participate in academic, vocational, and behaviour modification programmes during his incarceration.

These initiatives, she noted, aim to prepare him to make a meaningful contribution to society upon his eventual release. Willings’ sentence will be reduced for time already served in pre-trial detention, beginning February 15, 2021.
