Sophia Man Awaits Verdict in Child Rape Trial

November 20 2024 – Haisi Jones, a resident of Sophia, Greater Georgetown, is on trial at the Demerara High Court for three counts of child rape.
The trial, presided over by Justice Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, has entered its final phase.
Both the prosecution and defence have concluded their arguments, and the case is now in the hands of the court.
Justice Isaacs-Marcus will sum up the evidence on Thursday, November 21, 2024, before the 12- member jury begins deliberating on Jones’ fate.
Jones is accused of sexually penetrating a child under the age of 16, a charge that carries a potential life sentence under Guyana’s laws.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence to suggest a pattern of abuse, while the defence sought to challenge the credibility of the allegations.
Jones had been the subject of a wanted bulletin issued by police in June 2024. He was apprehended in October 2024 at Kairuni Backdam, located along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
