Soldiers come under fire at Border Region, one injured

May 6 2026

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has confirmed that one of its patrol units was engaged in two separate exchanges of gunfire on Tuesday afternoon while conducting border security operations in Region Seven.

According to the GDF, the incidents occurred along the Cuyuni River at approximately 16:10 hrs and 16:50 hrs at known locations. The patrol, which was escorting civilian vessels at the time, reportedly came under hostile fire on both occasions.

In response, the ranks acted in accordance with established operational procedures, returning fire and executing tactical manoeuvres to safely withdraw from the area. No injuries were reported among military personnel or civilians involved in the convoy.

The GDF emphasized that it will continue to maintain a sustained operational presence along Guyana’s western border, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of border communities.

The latest incident underscores ongoing security concerns in the region, as authorities remain on high alert amid continued tensions along Guyana’s frontier.
