A quantity of suspected cannabis was discovered on Tuesday morning during a riverine patrol in the vicinity of First Avenue, Bartica, along the Essequibo River.

Reports indicate that the discovery was made around 08:30 hrs after a wooden vessel with four occupants was intercepted. During the encounter, three bulky parcels were seen being discarded into the river but were quickly retrieved.

The parcels were subsequently opened in the presence of those aboard the vessel and were found to contain leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis. The substance was later weighed and amounted to 362 grams.

The matter remains under investigation.
