Police in Berbice have launched a major investigation following the discovery of ten AK-47 rifles during an intelligence-led operation along the No. 11 Village Public Road, Corentyne, on Friday.

According to information released by the Guyana Police Force, ranks attached to Regional Division #6 were conducting a stop-and-search exercise along the Berbice River Bridge Access Road between 1:00am and 4:30am when they intercepted a black Toyota Fielder Wagon bearing registration number HC 9018.

However, during the operation, the driver reportedly sped away from the scene, evading police and escaping east along the Corentyne roadway.

Acting on subsequent intelligence, officers later carried out a search in the vicinity of No. 11 Village Public Road, where they uncovered ten AK-47 rifles wrapped in plastic and cloth.

Investigators said the firearms bore markings consistent with 7.62x39mm rifles. Police also observed signs that parts of the weapons may have been tampered with in an apparent attempt to obscure serial numbers.

The rifles were later escorted to the Central Police Station, where they have since been lodged as investigations continue.

Further probes led investigators to identify the driver of motor car HC 9018 as a 33-year-old taxi driver from Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.

Police said the suspect was later intercepted at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, while still in possession of the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, investigators also discovered a second vehicle believed to have been linked to the transportation of the weapons. A white Toyota Runx bearing registration number PSS 4272 was found abandoned at Second Street, Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, around 6:00pm on Friday.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigators continue to probe the origin and intended destination of the high-powered weapons.
