Police Falcons Clinch Thrilling 60th Anniversary Rugby 7s Victory

The Police Falcons pose with their first place prize after the final on Sunday.
In a heart-stopping finale, the Police Falcons edged hosts Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 15-14 in the championship match of the GDF’s 60th Anniversary Rugby 7s tournament on Sunday.
What appeared destined to be a dominant Police victory transformed into a nail-biting contest, with GDF B mounting a desperate comeback that fell agonizingly short when Yannick Burnett’s last-minute wing break failed to secure the decisive try. The Falcons held their nerve in the final moments, claiming the trophy in a display of composure under extreme pressure that will be remembered as one of the tournament’s defining moments.
The Police Falcons had arrived at National Park as formidable contenders, and they announced their dominance immediately in their opening match against GDF A, unleashing a relentless offensive onslaught highlighted by tries from Lionel Holder, Michael Barrow, Theodore Henry, and Rickford Cummings.
The scoreboard told the story of their superiority: a devastating 19-0 victory that sent an unmistakable message, the Falcons had come to dominate. Their semifinal performance against GDF B proved even more devastating, with Holder orchestrating a magnificent attacking display that saw him cross the line three times while converting all his attempts. Adonis added another five points as the Falcons demolished their opponents 26-0, making their path to the final appear inevitable.
The Falcons struck first in the championship match, with Owen Adonis and O’Neal Charles crossing for tries that pushed them to a commanding 15-point lead. Their supporters roared, sensing another championship trophy was within reach. But GDF B refused to surrender. With characteristic determination, they clawed their way back into the contest, with Silverton Jack, Yannick Burnett, and Shaquille Dyte all contributing crucial points that narrowed the deficit to a single point. As the final minutes ticked away, the tension became unbearable.
In their last desperate effort, Burnett made a thrilling break down the wing, his legs pumping furiously as he powered toward the try line. The crowd held its collective breath, believing an improbable GDF victory might materialize, but the Falcons’ defense held firm, denying the breakthrough that would have delivered the trophy to the host nation. When the final whistle sounded, Police Falcons stood victorious, having weathered the storm to claim championship glory in a contest that perfectly encapsulated the drama and passion of the 60th anniversary celebrations.
