September 25, 2024 – The Ministry of Education (MOE) has launched an ambitious initiative to review and rewrite the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curriculum for grades 7-9, aimed at equipping Guyana’s youth with the skills necessary for the 21st-century workforce.

According to a statement issued by the MoE, this comprehensive overhaul, led by Dr. Ritesh Tularam, Deputy Chief Education Officer for Technical Education, is part of the Ministry’s broader effort to enhance the quality of education in line with global standards.

In collaboration with the World Bank, the initiative reflects a commitment to modernizing education and preparing students for an increasingly dynamic job market.

The revamped TVET curriculum will focus on fostering critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills, ensuring that students are well-prepared for both higher education and future careers.

Emphasizing hands-on experience, the new framework will be closely aligned with current industry demands and global best practices.

“This curriculum revamp is a key step in preparing students not just for exams, but for real-world challenges,” said Dr. Tularam. “Our students are tomorrow’s workforce, and we must ensure that they are equipped with both the knowledge and the skills they need to thrive in today’s rapidly changing economy.”

Core objectives of the curriculum overhaul include aligning education with industry needs, promoting innovation, and integrating modern teaching methods. The curriculum will ensure that students develop both technical expertise and the cognitive skills necessary to solve complex problems.

The Ministry’s commitment to an inclusive and adaptive education system remains at the forefront of this effort. By involving educators, industry experts, and community leaders in the process, the Ministry aims to build a curriculum that is both forward-thinking and grounded in the realities of the job market.

This initiative is a clear demonstration of the Ministry’s vision for an education system that responds to the evolving needs of society, ensuring that Guyanese students are prepared for success in a global landscape.
