Minister of Local Government, Priya Manickchand recently embarked on a nationwide initiative to engage directly with all 70 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) across Guyana.

Earlier today, Minister Manickchand met with representatives from the East Bank Demerara NDCs, including chairpersons, vice chairpersons, councillors, overseers, and auxiliary staff. The engagement marked the first time in the Ministry’s history that a meeting of this scale and nature had been held.

The session aimed to reinforce the roles and responsibilities of the NDCs while allowing the Minister to outline her expectations for effective leadership, transparency, and improved service delivery to communities.

Minister Manickchand was accompanied by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administration), Dr. Josh Kanhai; Technical Assistant and Administrator, Mr. Marcel Persaud; Community Development and Monitoring Officer, Ms. Carla Dodson; Chief Regional Development Officer, Mr. Deolall Rooplall; and Principal Regional Development Officer, Mr. Surendra Khayyam.

The meeting formed part of the Ministry’s broader effort to strengthen local governance and foster greater accountability and efficiency at the community level.
