Min. Bharrat Meets with Region 9 Leaders and Miners

November 11 2024 – Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, accompanied by Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, visited Aishalton recently to engage with village leaders from Aishalton and surrounding communities.
The visit centered on addressing concerns stemming from a recent incident at the Bush Mouth GGMC (Guyana Geology and Mines Commission) Sub-station, and its impact on Amerindian communities, local residents, and miners.
During the initial meeting in Aishalton, Minister Bharrat and Minister Benn discussed the incident’s effects on local communities, emphasizing the need for strengthened measures to ensure safety and protection for residents and miners alike. The ministers also explored strategies to prevent similar occurrences and reinforce community and mining security.
The delegation then traveled to Bush Mouth for a session with the Rupununi Miners Association. This meeting focused on understanding the specific challenges faced by miners as a result of the incident at the sub-station and identifying immediate and long-term solutions for enhanced security and support.
Ministers Bharrat and Benn stressed the government’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to foster a safe and supportive environment for mining operations and community development in Region Nine.
Their engagement highlighted collaborative efforts to protect livelihoods, promote sustainable mining practices, and safeguard the well-being of the region’s communities.
