Man remanded for allegedly robbing soldier at gunpoint

A 33-year-old man who is accused of robbing a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) of his valuables amounting to $430,00 was today remanded to prison. Melvin Jeane of Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Jeanne pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on January 21, 2021, at Market Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, while being armed with a gun, he robbed GDF rank, Lieutenant Kaya Dover of items, including jewellery and gadgets valuing $430,000, property of the said Dover.

Jeanne was remanded to prison until February 5, 2021.

According to information, on the day in question, about 04:45hrs, Dover was approached by the defendant who pointed a handgun to his head and relieved him of the articles mentioned in the charge. The matter was reported and following an investigation, Jeanne was arrested and charged for the offence.
