Man charged for fatally beating  vagrant with brick

A man who was seen on CCTV footage pounding a sleeping vagrant to the head with a brick was today charged with murder. Twenty-seven-year-old Kareem Stewart of 599 Toucan Drive South Ruimveldt, Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Stewart was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on January 27, 2021, at Camp Street, Georgetown, he murdered Mark Benjamin known as “Curl up Toe”.

He was remanded to prison until February 11, 2021. According to the prosecution facts, on the day in question, at about 03:30 hrs, the victim was laying on the eastern side of Camp Street in the vicinity of Tele-performance, when it was observed that Stewart called “Rims” dealt the victim four lashes to his head with a brick. He then made good his escape.

The matter was reported and police ranks upon viewing CCTV footage in the area, was able to arrest Stewart. The court heard that while in custody, the allegation was put to him and he admitted to murdering Benjamin. Hence, the present charge.

In June of 2013, Stewart was charged with break and enter and larceny.
