A high-profile evening celebrating press freedom descended into chaos on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire near the venue hosting the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, prompting the evacuation of U.S. President Donald Trump and hundreds of attendees.
The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. at the Washington Hilton, where journalists, lawmakers, celebrities, and senior government officials had gathered for the prestigious event. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, triggering panic as guests ducked under tables and security personnel rushed to secure the area.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect identified as a 31 year-old California man was heavily armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives when he attempted to breach a Secret Service security checkpoint near the hotel lobby. He was intercepted by agents and taken into custody following a brief confrontation. Authorities believe the attacker acted alone.
During the confrontation, one Secret Service agent was struck by gunfire but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover. No fatalities were reported.
President Trump, along with the First Lady, Vice President, and Cabinet members, was swiftly evacuated by Secret Service agents as a precaution. The president later confirmed that the suspect had been apprehended and praised law enforcement for their rapid response.
The annual dinner, which typically draws more than 2,000 attendees, was immediately postponed and is expected to be rescheduled within 30 days.
Eyewitness accounts described scenes of confusion and fear, with some attendees initially mistaking the gunfire for dropped items before realizing the severity of the situation. Lawmakers present at the event called for a comprehensive review of security protocols at major political gatherings.
The incident has reignited broader concerns about security at high-profile national events and comes amid heightened tensions in the United States surrounding political figures and public safety. Investigations are ongoing, with federal charges already filed against the suspect, including assault on a federal officer and use of a firearm during a violent crime.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a clear motive for the attack.
