Crew member’s fiancée desperate for news after MV Barima sinking

July 19 2026
Kevin Heyman, a 28-year-old resident of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, is among the persons who were onboard the distressed MV Barima, which sank off the coast of Essequibo between July 18 and 19, 2026, while on a voyage from Georgetown to Port Kaituma.
His fiancée, Nidra Lackna told BIG Smith News Watch that Heyman who was a crew member for approximately 12 years, was in contact with her when the vessel departed and they were exchanging messages up until around 10:34 p.m. on Saturday night.
Lackna said she initially believed the lack of response was due to poor network connection and went to sleep, but woke up Sunday morning and learnt of the vessel’s distress through news reports.
She is now awaiting further information on Heyman’s whereabouts.
