A 35-year-old Hampshire Village labourer has been charged in connection with the death of Kildonan Primary School Headteacher Sonia Williams, who was killed in a road accident on the Corentyne earlier this week.

The accused has been identified as Aarvindra Singh, a Guyanese male of Indian descent, of Lot 174 Hampshire Village, Corentyne, Berbice. He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.

He was remanded to prison.

Williams, 51, of Chesney Housing Scheme, Corentyne, was killed at about 3:21 p.m. Monday along the Rose Hall Town Public Road.

Police said Williams’ motor car, PAK 5566, was stationary on the southern side of the road when she reportedly attempted to open the right-side front door. A white motor car travelling west allegedly collided with Williams and the opened door.

Williams fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries. She was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital before being transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she subsequently succumbed while receiving treatment.

Police later identified the vehicle involved as PJJ 7624 and its driver as Singh, a resident of Hampshire. The vehicle was impounded as investigations continued.

Williams’ body remains at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Her death has left the Region Six education community mourning, with colleagues remembering her for her years of dedicated service to education.
