GECOM Warns Against Circulation of Fake Election Results

September 1 2025
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued a firm warning against the spread of fake Statements of Poll (SoPs) and other false election results circulating on social media platforms, stressing that such actions are misleading and constitute a serious offence.
The Commission noted that any individual or group found responsible for publishing false election information will be reported to the Guyana Police Force for investigation.
At a media briefing on Monday, GECOM emphasized that it is the sole authority empowered to release the official results of the 2025 General and Regional Elections. The Commission underscored that the vote tabulation process is still ongoing and that no unofficial or premature claims should be considered credible.
GECOM condemned the circulation of doctored SoPs and election-related disinformation, pointing in particular to misleading posts made on social media platforms.
The Commission has urged political parties, media outlets, and the wider public to exercise patience during the tabulation process and to rely only on official updates published by GECOM.
According to the Commission, all certified election results will be posted on its official website (www.gecom.org.gy) in the form of:
-
Statements of Poll (SoPs)
-
Official declarations by Returning Officers for each district
-
Declarations by Supernumerary Returning Officers for sub-districts
GECOM reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and urged the public to ignore and report any unofficial information circulating online.
