Faulty Regulator Caused Sophia Explosion- Massy Gas

September 5 2025
Massy Gas Products Guyana Ltd. has confirmed that a defective, non-recommended regulator was the cause of a flash explosion that left two people injured early Thursday morning at Lot 121 C Field, Sophia.

In a statement, the company stressed that its investigation found no fault with the LPG cylinder itself.
Instead, it concluded that the use of an unsuitable regulator, which continued to release gas even when in the “OFF” position, directly triggered the explosion.
A technical response team was dispatched to the residence at 14:20 hrs the same day, where they conducted an on-site assessment alongside the customer, Mr. King Jarod, brother of one of the injured persons. During the inspection, Massy Gas noted:

The LPG cylinder showed no evidence of leaks.
The rubber seal was intact.
The cylinder, purchased just two days earlier, was nearly full.
The installed regulator was non-recommended and defective.
The company confirmed that it immediately replaced the unsafe regulator with a recommended Kosan regulator, hose, and clips, ensuring the installation met required safety standards before leaving the premises.
Massy Gas underscored that this incident highlights the dangers of using unapproved fittings, warning that only Kosan regulators, hoses, and clips that meet established safety standards should be used.
The company urged customers to inspect their equipment regularly and to report any suspected leaks or faults immediately to its 24-hour emergency hotline (592-600-0839) and to the Guyana Fire Service.
Reaffirming its commitment to customer safety, Massy Gas stated it will continue investing in public awareness campaigns and safety education programmes to help households and businesses use LPG responsibly.
