A 28-year-old Linden man who admitted to raping a child under the age of 16 has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment following a hearing at the Demerara Criminal Assizes.
The convict, Gallard Gill, also known as “Daddy Boy,” appeared before Justice Damone Younge at the Demerara High Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.
During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors Simran Gajraj, Padma Dubraj, and Geneva Wills stressed the seriousness of the crime, pointing to the victim’s young age and the profound, long-term impact on both the child and their family.
They further highlighted the prevalence of child sexual abuse in Guyana, urging the court to impose a sentence that would serve as both punishment and deterrence.
Justice Younge, in handing down the sentence, said the offence warranted a starting point of 18 years.
However, Gill was granted a one-third reduction for his early guilty plea, bringing the sentence down to 12 years.
Justice Younge further directed that Gill participate in all rehabilitation programmes available within the prison system to aid in his reform.
