Two ranks under close arrest over death of prisoner

The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the death of a 30-year-old man who died while in police custody at the Cove and John Police Station, East Coast Demerara.
The deceased, a resident of South Haslington, reportedly died under circumstances that have prompted an internal probe by the Guyana Police Force.
According to a statement from the Police, as part of the investigation, several police officers and civilian witnesses have already been questioned, and statements have been collected.
Authorities have confirmed that two police ranks attached to the station have been placed under close arrest and are currently assisting with the ongoing investigation.
The Guyana Police Force has indicated that the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness, with all necessary procedures being followed to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted on Friday, March 27, 2026, as investigators seek to determine the cause of death.
Investigations remain ongoing.
