‘Cut Rose’ Project earns $5.3M in 2023

The visionary ‘Cut Rose’ Project, initiated by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, stands as a testament to its ongoing success in not only creating employment opportunities but also generating substantial income for women and single parents.
The latest report for the year 2023 underscores the remarkable achievement of the project, having garnered an impressive income of $5.3 million through the production of a staggering 22,895 roses.
According to a report from the Department of Public Information during a recent year-end press conference, Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, highlighted the project’s significance by revealing that this income constitutes a substantial 54.51 percent of the total 42,000 roses imported annually.
Minister Mustapha emphasized the project’s pivotal role in satisfying the local market in Guyana, proudly stating that it now contributes 50 percent to the importation of roses that were previously brought in from abroad. Expressing optimism, he added, “I am hopeful that within another year or two, we can completely meet the rising demand for roses within our country.”
A crucial component of the ‘Cut Rose’ Project involves the cultivation of numerous roses within specially designed shade houses at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) in Mon Repos. This strategic initiative not only ensures the efficient production of high-quality roses but also contributes to the overall success of the project.
The pricing structure for these locally cultivated roses is diverse, reflecting the unique characteristics and qualities of each variety. Customers can expect to choose from a range of roses, with prices varying between $300 and approximately $500.
This pricing model enables consumers to select roses based on their preferences and budget, further enhancing the accessibility of these locally grown flowers.
Beyond economic considerations, the government is dedicated to promoting inclusivity in the agricultural sector, specifically targeting women, young people, and single parents through this pioneering project. By fostering diversification in agriculture, the ‘Cut Rose’ Project aims to empower these demographics, providing them with sustainable livelihoods and opportunities for financial growth.
Looking ahead, the expansion of the project is poised to bring about even greater benefits for single parents and women involved in the initiative. The government’s commitment to ensuring the continued success of the ‘Cut Rose’ Project reaffirms its dedication to fostering economic growth, inclusivity, and sustainable development in the agricultural landscape of Guyana.
