MoA Hands Over Excavators to East Berbice-Corentyne NDCs

March 3 2025 – In a move to strengthen local drainage infrastructure, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha handed over eight mini-excavators to Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six).

The initiative, valued at approximately $112 million, aligns with the government’s ongoing commitment to improving community drainage systems.

Minister Mustapha highlighted that President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo have prioritized equipping all NDCs across Guyana with mini-excavators to enhance their capacity for maintaining drainage channels.

This initiative, he explained, is part of the administration’s broader effort to empower local authorities and strengthen climate resilience.

These machines will significantly improve drainage maintenance, helping communities mitigate the effects of flooding and climate change, Mustapha stated. He reiterated the government’s commitment to modernizing the country’s drainage systems, ensuring that local authorities have the necessary tools to support sustainable development.

With this latest distribution, all 22 Local Authority Areas in Region Six now have mini-excavators to assist with drainage maintenance, marking a milestone in the government’s efforts to enhance regional infrastructure.
