At approximately 13:45pm yesterday, Water Tenders from the Melanie Fire Station and the Campbellville Fire Station raced to the scene of a raging fire at a vehicle junkyard situated at Lot 6 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara.

The inferno, which consumed a significant number of derelict vehicles and a wooden shed, proved to be a devastating blow to businessman Roshan Ali Snr.

In the aftermath, a considerable quantity of derelict vehicles and the wooden structure was severely damaged.

According to a statement from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), preliminary reports point to a deliberate act of arson, with unknown individuals allegedly setting fire to grass, the flames of which quickly spread to the derelict vehicles and ultimately ignited the wooden shed.

The GFS further stated that in an effort to combat the intense blaze, two jets operated from Light Pump #128, drawing water from an open source, while an additional two jets relied on Water Tenders #85 and #95 for their water supplies.

The matter has since been handed over to the Guyana Police Force for further investigations.
