Refusal to tend to child based on her race, lands dentist in hot water

A dental surgeon attached to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital was granted self bail when he appeared before the Fort Wellington Magistrate Court. The allegation is that he refused to performed an extraction on a child because of her ethnicity.

33 year old Surindra Rampersaud of Cotton Tree village, West Coast Berbice pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Peter Hugh on Wednesday.

The allegation is that on September 18, 2020 while being employed as a dental surgeon attached to the Fort Wellington Hospital, he refused to perform a a tooth extraction on the child who was named in court. His alleged refusal is said to be because of the child’s ethnicity.

He will return to court on January 22.
