A man was this morning shot dead in the Vigilance Police Station Compound in the police ‘C’ Division East Coast Demerara. According to information reaching the BIG Smith Crime Watch, the police responded to a report of damage to property and disorderly behavior.

Killed suspect, 24 year old Teon Maxwell a father of one of Bareroot, East Coast Demerara was shot after inflicting a number of bodily harm to a party of policemen who arrested him.

The cops went to the location and made an arrest. When they returned to the police station, the suspect was left in the vehicle and the police driver left the engine running.

The suspect jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to drive off with the vehicle and crash it.

He then exited the vehicle and attempted to run away when a police constable discharged a round behind him which struck him.

The man fell to the ground and he died in the compound of the station. His mother poke with the press at the Vigilance Police Station, shortly after providing the police with a statement.

The mother said that on Friday night, her son abused his reputed wife and also attempted to kill her. The woman also said that the man again attempted to kill the woman today by chocking her and even sharpening knives and a cutlass to stab and chop the woman up.

The outspoken mother said that she encouraged her daughter in law to go to the police station. Further, she said that after the man refused to go and sort out the issue, the man refused and the police were called to get him.

According to her, when the police arrived, her son was armed with two knives, a cutlass and hammer, all of which he allowed to be escorted to the police station with, and without being handcuffed.

We were told that at the station, while efforts were being made to have the man enter the police station, he whipped out the the knife from his waist and began assaulting the ranks, causing two of them to receive injuries to their hands and one reportedly received a stab wound to the abdomen.

At some point, the young man managed to over the ranks and jumped into the police vehicle which still had its engine running and attempted to drive off.

That prompted a police rank to open fire while the man was still in the vehicle and he was struck and killed.

The police have since launched an investigation both in relation to the incident and the apparent breach of standard operating procedure in arresting, escorting and detaining suspects. The sop as it relates to the use and care of vehicles assigned, is also a matter under internal investigation by the force.
