The search for little Orlando Jaikarran came to a heartbreaking end early Tuesday morning after his father, a 47-Y-O fisherman has reportedly admitted to throwing the 6-Y-O into a canal after learning that the child was not his biological offspring.
Bharrat Jaikarran, called “Crank,” reportedly made the admission during an interview with investigators probing Orlando’s disappearance and death.
According to information provided to police, Jaikarran said he had visited a purported “pujari church” at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, where he questioned a person identified as Ravi about whether his children were biologically his.
He claimed that Ravi told him Orlando was not his biological child.
The suspect reportedly told investigators that at about 12:08 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, he took Orlando to Waterloo Bath Waterside, West Coast Berbice, and threw him into the main canal.
Orlando, a pupil of Bath Settlement Primary School, lived with his father at Lot 250, Plantation Hope, West Coast Berbice.
Jaikarran had initially reported the child missing on October 15, claiming that his younger son had alerted him at about 5:15 a.m. that Orlando was missing.
He said he searched the bedroom and surrounding areas before going to Fort Wellington Police Station to make a report.
The suspect reportedly explained that he and Orlando’s mother, 32-year-old Navita Ramnarine, had separated about three years ago, after which a welfare officer placed their four children in his care.
Ramnarine told investigators that she provides monthly child maintenance through the court and had last seen Orlando about a year ago.
The child’s paternal grandmother, 65-year-old Dhankoomarie Gowkarran, known as “Shantie,” told investigators that she last saw Orlando on October 12. She said it was customary for her grandchildren to visit her almost daily after school.
During a further interview on October 19, Jaikarran reportedly gave investigators an account of what happened to the child.
A video and audio-recorded interview was subsequently conducted between 10:32 p.m. and 10:55 p.m., during which he was informed of the allegation and cautioned.
Police also visited the suspect’s residence, where a blue Honda motorcycle bearing registration number CR 2515 and a yellow T-shirt with white and red stripes were recovered and lodged as exhibits.
Investigators retrieved CCTV recordings from the surrounding area, while a search party was formed to search the canal for the child. The search conducted at that time did not locate Orlando.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
