A multi-agency response was kicked in early this morning, January 01, 2022 after a fire distress alarm was raised at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn confirmed the development to this publication.

BIG Smith News Watch has been told that the fire was detected in a scanning room where patients are scanned for various complaints.

We were told that it was very difficult at first to locate the fire as there was smoke everywhere and coming through the vents within the hospital.

The Guyana Fire Service arrived on scene at approximately 05:50 hours and got into their firefighting mood.

Patients had to be evacuated and the situation has since been brought under control.

Minister Benn is urging persons to be vigilant and has also reminded that smoke detectors should be placed in buildings to prevent any major conflagrations.

In addition to Minister Benn, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony and police operatives are also on the ground at the moment.
