Because We Care’ Cash Grant Distribution Begins in Regions 7 and 9

May 13, 2025 -The Ministry of Education has officially launched the 2025 distribution of the ‘Because We Care’ Cash Grant, beginning in Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Region 9 (Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo).
According to the Ministry This marks the start of what is expected to be the program’s most impactful year yet, providing direct financial assistance to thousands of students and families across the country.

This year, each student is receiving a total of $55,000, which includes a $50,000 cash grant and an additional $5,000 specifically for school uniforms and supplies. The initiative, which started in 2014 with a modest $10,000 grant, has steadily grown in value since its reintroduction in 2021.
The launch event in Bartica saw the active participation of Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, who visited several schools and distribution centres to monitor the rollout and engage with parents. The distribution process was described as smooth and efficient, with strong turnout from families.
The cash grant program is designed to support families in preparing for the school year by easing the burden of educational expenses such as textbooks, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation. It is a nationwide effort to ensure that every child enrolled in school, regardless of background or status, receives equal access to this support.
In Region 7, 8,145 students are set to benefit from a combined investment of $447,975,000, while 10,831 students in Region 9 will receive a total of $595,705,000 in cash grants by the end of the week.
On a national level, the program targets approximately 205,000 students, supported by an $11 billion allocation in the 2025 national budget. The cash grant continues to serve as a cornerstone of the government’s broader education and social support strategy, aimed at reducing inequalities and ensuring that no child is left behind.
With the grant distribution now underway, the government is reinforcing its commitment to education as a national priority by empowering parents and enabling students to access the resources they need for academic success.
