Another trial for suspect in remigrant’s murder after hung jury

A 12-member jury was unable to arrive at a verdict (hung jury) in the trial of a 26-year-old man who is accused of murdering remigrant agriculturist, Anthony Breedy

Donell Trapp, called ‘Shortman’, was on trial for the capital offence before Justice Jo Ann Barlow at the Demerara High Court. He is accused of murdering Breedy, 60, between March 12 and 14, 2016.

Following more than two hours of deliberation on Tuesday, the jury was deadlocked. In light of this, Trapp was further remanded to prison pending another trial at the next Demerara Criminal Assizes.

The murder accused was represented by Attorneys-at-Law Dexter Smartt and Jevon Coxx while Senior State Counsel Lisa Cave and State Counsel Latifah Elliott appeared for the prosecution.

Breedy was found dead at around 11:00h on March 14, 2016, at the bottom flat of his Hill Foot, Soesdyke-Linden Highway home.

The pensioner’s hands and feet were bound, and his head was bashed in. Also, a piece of wood suspected to be the murder weapon was found next to him.

A post mortem examination performed on his remains revealed that he died as a result of asphyxia due to manual strangulation compounded by multiple blunt trauma to the head.

Last month, 25-year-old Keino Corbin called ‘Trini’, who had been jointly charged with Trapp for the man’s murder, pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge.

He was, however, initially indicted for murder. Sentencing for Corbin was deferred to later this month.
