Henry Murders: Benn confident about charges, Harmon hopes the right persons were charged

As Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn is praising the police’s work that resulted in charges in the Henry cousins’ murders, Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon said he hopes the right persons have been charged.

On Friday morning, Vinod “Magga” Gopaul, Anil “Dan Pole” Sanchara and Akash “Monkey” Singh appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with the September 2020 murders of Joel and Isiah Henry. The police claimed that Singh’s confession implicated the others in the crime while a fourth person is being sought.

Minister Benn told the media on the side lines of an event that ” the issue appears to have been fairly, quickly resolved.” He said this is even as “there were attempts” to what he described as interfering with and “confusing the investigations” while putting “doubts and malicious suggestions” that the police did not have the ability and capability to solve the murders.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Harmon when asked for a reaction to the charges said that while the matter is at a delicate stage, “I hope that they have the right people.”

Harmon said that the action of the Guyana Police Force and the manner in which the police conducted the investigation “does not inspire confidence in their ability to find the right people.” Harmon said too that he hopes the police are “not just pinning this on somebody for the sake of saying we have solved the matter.”
