Barrel murder; Detained man had earlier introduced woman to his mother

Anyone who has not seen or heard from a female relative over the last few weeks or days is advised to contact the police who are seeking to ascertain the identity of a woman whose decomposed remains were found stuffed in a barrel which was rolled into a trench in Berbice.
The woman whose remains were found is said to be of East Indian Descent according to the police. On Sunday, the woman’s reputed husband, Suraj Veerasammy was arrested as he was hiding under the Canje Bridge in Berbice.
BIG Smith News Watch has been told that some time ago, Suraj Veerasammy took the young lady to his mother and other relatives where he introduced her as his partner. However, the woman did not speak much about herself or family during the introduction to Veerasammy’s relatives.
On Saturday, residents of Belvedere, Corentyne Berbice stumbled on a barrel in a trench that carried a high stench. One resident who lived close where the discovery was made indicated that he was at home when he got the stench and went to investigate and encounter the barrel with the woman stuffed inside.
He raised an alarm and then the police were informed. We were told that a cloth that was at the front of the barrel was removed and that exposed a human leg pointing out. A resident who spoke with BIG Smith News Watch related that a couple who recently moved to the village were living at a house a short distance away from where the body was found.
Neighbors alleged that the couple had a heated argument on Thursday morning and never heard from them again. One neighbor then related that the clothing the woman was wearing on Thursday last is the very clothing she was found clad in at the time of the discovery. There were visible marks of violence on the woman’s face and about her body, she was also found with a cloth tied around her neck.
The couple had two blue barrels in the yard which is usually used to full water, however only one barrel was found in the yard and the other was missing when the police commenced their investigation, a development that raised the suspicions of the community that the remains in the barrel were that of the woman.
