Driver for Azruddin Mohamed arrested as he left court

Eugene Thorne, the driver for Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, was arrested at 10:00 AM today shortly after stepping out of the courtroom of Magistrate Faith McGusty.

His defense attorney, Damien DaSilva, confirmed the arrest to the BIG Smith News Watch, noting that law enforcement took Thorne into custody immediately following his court appearance.

The hearing pertained to unrelated charges of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and obstruction of justice, which were subsequently adjourned for disclosures until November 27 at 9:30 AM.

DaSilva further confirmed that Thorne’s arrest stems from an alleged breach of Section 9(b)(1) of the Cybercrime Act No. 16 of 2018. The move forms part of a broader national security investigation into the unauthorized extraction of data from Guyana’s national safe camera surveillance network.

Investigators are examining links between the footage and an alleged $800,000 bribe concerning a shooting incident involving Head of Special Branch Prem Narine.

Under Section 9 of the Cybercrime Act, the law governs offences surrounding the unauthorized receiving, giving, or obtaining of access to computer data.

Specifically, Section 9(1)(b) establishes that an individual commits a severe crime if they intentionally access, obtain, or share electronic data related to state security without lawful authority. Section 9(2)(b) stipulates heavy financial penalties and lengthy prison terms for anyone convicted under these national security provisions.

Thorne’s detention follows the remanding of his employer, Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, and 20-year-old Police Constable Ryan Greene.

On Friday, October 30, 2026, both men appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, charged jointly with the unauthorized distribution of electronic data under the same statute. The charges follow an alleged security breach occurring on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Constable Greene was taken into custody on October 26, while Mohamed was arrested two days later on October 28.

During the October 30 proceeding, King’s Counsel Darshan Ramdhani led the prosecution. Mohamed, 39, of Houston, Greater Georgetown, was represented by a defense panel comprising Nigel Hughes, Roysdale Forde, Siand Dhurjon, and Damien DaSilva. Constable Greene, a resident of Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, was represented by attorneys Dexter Todd and Darren Wade. Magistrate Gibbs denied bail applications for both defendants, remanding them to prison until their next scheduled court date on November 24, 2026.

Prior to the magistrate court appearances, Justice Christel Lambert-Meertins ruled on the civil matter of Randy Greene v. The Commissioner of Police and The Attorney General of Guyana.

The judge ordered the immediate release of Nikita Greene from police custody while granting law enforcement permission to maintain the detention of Constable Ryan Greene.
