Police are investigating the suspected drowning of 16-year-old Vernil Fredricks of Fitzburg, Port Kaituma, who reportedly drowned on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Canal Bank, Port Kaituma, North West District.

According to reports, Fredricks was swimming in the middle of the river around 14:20 hours when he began calling for help before disappearing beneath the water. A report was made to the Port Kaituma Police Station, and with the assistance of public-spirited residents, his body was later retrieved.

CPR was administered but proved unsuccessful. He was taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body is currently at the Port Kaituma Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
