Execution survivor Christa Pike is awake and speaking

Death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and speaking from a hospital after surviving Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection, according to a statement released by her attorneys Tuesday.

Pike, 50, was transported to a hospital after the state’s execution attempt on September 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Officials administered two doses of pentobarbital, but the execution was halted after Pike remained alive and continued to have a heartbeat.

Her attorneys said Pike remains hospitalized and is receiving critical medical care. Her prognosis is still uncertain, and they expect her recovery to be lengthy. They also said she suffered severe injuries to her arms during the procedure, including burns and blistering.

“Against all odds,” Pike is now conscious and able to speak, marking a significant improvement from several days earlier, when her attorneys said she was unconscious, critically ill and dependent on a ventilator.

Pike’s legal team is seeking information and evidence surrounding the failed execution, including drug lot numbers, needles, execution logs and other records. A court hearing is scheduled to address their request.

The incident has also triggered a broader review of Tennessee’s execution procedures.

Republican Gov. Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive third-party investigation and halted the state’s remaining scheduled execution for 2026 following the failed attempt. Tennessee’s Department of Correction has maintained that officials followed the state’s established execution protocol.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Jobs Corps worker. Tennessee’s Department of Correction identifies Pike as the only woman currently on the state’s death row.

Her survival has created unprecedented legal and medical questions, as she is believed to be the first known person in the United States to survive after lethal-injection drugs were actually administered during an execution attempt. Her attorneys are also asking Gov. Lee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment without parole.

For now, Pike remains hospitalized as doctors continue treating her injuries and monitoring her recovery, while her legal team prepares for the next stage of what is likely to become a major legal challenge surrounding Tennessee’s execution procedures.
