Couchman, Sandiford and Clement meet chess title requirements

Three Guyanese players reached conditional title requirements during the country’s campaign at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Kyle Couchman and Keron Sandiford qualified for Candidate Master titles, while Ciel Clement met the requirements for Woman Candidate Master. All three remain subject to official FIDE confirmation.
Guyana’s Open team finished 132nd among 206 teams, improving on its starting position of 137th. It also ranked fourth among the 23 Caribbean teams, winning five matches and losing six.
Sachin Pitamber scored 4.5 points from nine games and gained 58.8 rating points. His results included a draw against Grandmaster Kelires in the third-round meeting with Cyprus. Anthony Drayton also scored 4.5 points, from eight games, and gained 28 rating points.
The women’s team placed 152nd out of 189, recording victories over St Vincent and the Grenadines, Somalia, Mali and San Marino during the 11-round tournament.
