Agriculture Month 2026 to spotlight innovation and sustainable growth

Agriculture Month 2026 will officially get underway on October 1, with a month-long programme aimed at showcasing innovation, technology and the continued transformation of Guyana’s agriculture sector.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha delivered the feature address at the official launch today, where he highlighted the growing adoption of modern technologies and climate-smart practices by farmers across the country.
This year’s observance is being held under the theme, “Innovate, Nourish, Grow: Building a Strong and Sustainable Guyana.”
Mustapha said the theme reflects the changes taking place within the sector as Guyana works to build a more modern, productive and sustainable agricultural industry.
He pointed to the increasing use of science, research, mechanisation, digital agriculture and climate-smart production systems, noting that farmers are making greater use of tools such as drones, sensors, precision irrigation and digital platforms.
Among the initiatives highlighted was the Farmers Connect app, which is being used as part of efforts to integrate technology into agricultural production and service delivery.
The Minister also stressed agriculture’s role in ensuring that Guyanese have access to safe, affordable and nutritious food, while strengthening national food sovereignty and Guyana’s contribution to regional food and nutrition security.
According to Mustapha, Guyana’s progress has received international recognition, with the Food and Agriculture Organization identifying the country as one of only four in Latin America and the Caribbean where the prevalence of hunger and undernourishment is below 2.5 percent.
Throughout October, Agriculture Month will feature a packed calendar of activities designed to bring citizens closer to the sector.
The programme will include farmers’ markets, the inaugural Farmers’ Conference, the Annual Honey Fest, World Food Day activities and other events highlighting developments across agriculture.
Mustapha said the activities will also create opportunities for knowledge sharing, stronger market linkages and greater visibility for farmers, fisherfolk, livestock producers, agro-processors and other stakeholders.
As Agriculture Month 2026 begins, the observance will highlight the progress made across Guyana’s agriculture sector while placing renewed focus on innovation, technology and investment as key drivers of sustainable growth.
