Kwakwani’s ‘Mother B’ celebrates 104 Years of life

Kwakwani’s beloved centenarian, Mavis Bartrum, affectionately known as “Mother B,” has reached an extraordinary milestone, celebrating her 104th birthday on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Bartrum, a longtime resident of Kwakwani in Region 10, has become a cherished figure in the community. Her family has maintained a tradition of celebrating her birthday each year, bringing relatives and well-wishers together to honour her remarkable life and longevity.

This year’s celebrations took on a special form, with a birthday walk held in her honour. The event brought together supporters who participated in a route through several parts of Georgetown.

The walk began at Lot 54 William Street, Kitty, before proceeding west along William Street, south into Vlissengen Road, west into Sandy Babb Street and north back onto Vlissengen Road. Participants continued around the Kitty Roundabout, along Clive Lloyd Drive and Rupert Craig Highway, before making their way through Sheriff Street and back toward Kitty.

The route eventually returned to Lot 54 William Street, where the walk concluded.

Organisers said all necessary safety protocols were followed, contributing to the successful completion of the event.

Her name also appears in Guyana’s official electoral records for Kwakwani, providing additional documentation of her connection to the community.

For a woman who has witnessed more than a century of change, “Mother B’s” 104th birthday represents not only a personal achievement, but also a moment for family and community to celebrate her enduring presence.
