GPF probing alleged bribery along Lethem Trail

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched an investigation into allegations that Police and Immigration ranks operating along the Lethem Trail and in Lethem have been receiving payments to facilitate the movement of foreign nationals.

The allegations surfaced in a publication circulating on social media and have prompted Commissioner of Police Dr Clifton Hicken to direct the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) to investigate the claims and determine their veracity.

The GPF said the allegations are serious and warrant an immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the claims.

Commissioner Hicken has reiterated that corruption and misconduct have no place within the Force and that no rank will be shielded if evidence establishes wrongdoing.

Any member of the Force found to have acted unlawfully or breached established regulations will face action in accordance with the law and established disciplinary procedures, the GPF said.

The Force is also appealing to anyone with information or evidence relevant to the allegations to provide it to the OPR to assist with the investigation.

The GPF said it remains committed to maintaining professionalism, accountability and integrity among its ranks.
