Truck Driver electrocuted after excavator snags power line

A 30-year-old truck driver was electrocuted early Tuesday morning after an excavator being transported on his truck reportedly came into contact with a high-voltage Guyana Power and Light (GPL) wire near Oragangestein, East Bank Essequibo.
The dead man has been identified as Andrew Sookra of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara.
Reports indicate that Sookra had opened the truck’s tray to allow another driver to offload the excavator, locally referred to as a Hymac, when its boom reportedly snagged the overhead power line.
Sookra, who reportedly was not wearing protective safety gear, was struck by electricity and thrown into a nearby ditch. He sustained severe burns to his hands, feet and chest and was pronounced dead at the De Kindren Hospital.
The driver who was operating the Hymac was reportedly detained by police and later released on bail.
Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the fatal workplace accident.
