Deadly floods strike Nepal-Tibet border, hundreds missing

A catastrophic flash flood along the Nepal – Tibet border has killed at least 98 people and left hundreds missing, after torrents of water, mud and debris swept through communities and destroyed critical infrastructure on both sides of the Himalayan frontier.

Nepalese authorities reported at least 95 deaths and hundreds of people unaccounted for following the disaster in Rasuwa district, where floodwaters surged through riverside settlements, washing away homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. More than 380 people, including hundreds of foreign tourists and travelers, were reported missing in Nepal.

The disaster also affected Tibet’s Gyirong County, where Chinese authorities reported at least three deaths and 265 people missing after a major mudslide struck the area. Chinese state media said the casualty figures remain preliminary as rescue teams continue searching affected areas.

The combined toll from the Nepal and Tibet disasters has therefore reached at least 98 confirmed deaths, although officials warn the numbers could rise as emergency crews reach isolated communities and search through the debris.

Foreign nationals among those missing

The scale of the disaster has raised particular concern for foreign tourists and pilgrims traveling through the region. Nepal’s authorities reported 403 people missing, including 341 foreign nationals from at least 26 countries, according to The Associated Press. Among those unaccounted for are Indian pilgrims traveling toward Mount Kailash, as well as nationals from the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada and other countries.

South Korea has also reported that eight of its nationals working on a hydropower project in the affected region are missing.

Rescue efforts hampered by destruction

Emergency operations have been complicated by damaged roads, destroyed bridges, continuing rain and rapidly rising water levels.

Rescue crews are working to reach isolated communities while authorities remain concerned about the possibility of additional flooding if debris blocks waterways upstream.

Reuters reported that the flooding followed a massive landslide of mud and rock into the Lhende River. A 4.4-magnitude earthquake has been identified as a possible trigger, although authorities have not established a definitive cause. Other potential factors, including an avalanche or glacial-related event, are also being considered.

The Nepalese Army and other emergency agencies have been deployed to assist with search-and-rescue operations, while China and India have also mobilized resources in response to the disaster.

The devastation comes during the Himalayan monsoon season, when heavy rainfall regularly increases the risk of flash floods and landslides. Experts have increasingly warned that rising temperatures and changes in the region’s glaciers can heighten the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to extreme flooding events.

With hundreds still unaccounted for, authorities on both sides of the border are continuing search-and-rescue operations, while families await news of those swept away by one of the region’s most devastating disasters in recent years.
