Processing for land title cut to under three months

The government has slashed the processing time for land titles to less than three months, according to Minister of Housing Collin Croal.

The minister made the announcement earlier this evening during the opening ceremony of the International Building Expo 2026 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

He also disclosed that more than 2,200 certificates of title will be distributed over the next three days of the expo.

Minister Croal attributed the improvement to enhanced collaboration between the Ministry of Housing and Water, the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), and the Deeds and Commercial Registries Authority, which helped clear a backlog at the land registry.

The Ministry was able to process over 25,000 titles, and this year alone, for the first six months, over 6,500 titles were processed.

He explained that the backlog developed as the government’s housing drive expanded, leading to an increase in the number of titles generated by CH&PA and placing additional pressure on the land registry.

To address the delays, the ministry engaged the Land Registrar and implemented measures to accelerate processing.

Highlighting the scale of the housing programme, Minister Croal said more than 53,000 house lots were allocated between 2020 and 2025, with over 45 per cent going to low-income earners.
