CONVICTED: Damon Hassana

A nineteen-year-old girl who was raped back in 2015 when she was just thirteen years old got her justice served on Thursday when the man who committed the act was found guilty of the crime when he appeared before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a jury.

The convict, 33-year-old Damon Hassana was initially indicted on three counts of rape with a child below the age of 16 but was only found guilty on the third count.

That charge stated that between November 1 and 31, 2015, in the county of Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under age 16. At the time of the rape, the 13-year-old child also became pregnant. The young girl and Hassana are known to each other since she was growing up.

The jury’s verdict was unanimous. In the circumstances, the convicted child rapist was remanded to prison until June 3, 2021, when he will be sentenced after the presentation of a probation report and victim impact statement.

Hassana was represented by Attorney-at-law Ravnidra Mohabir, while State Counsel Sarah Martin and State Counsel Nafeeza Baig appeared for the Prosecution.

Among the series of events that took place in 2015 was one day when Hassana asked the girl to meet him downstairs. The child was instructed to get undress which she did and Hassana raped the child. Still in 2015 when the teen’s mother sent her to the shop, Hassana held the held her against her will, placed her into his vehicle and went to his home where he raped her. In early December of the same year the teen began vomiting while at school and she was taken for medical attention and tests proved she was pregnant.

The teenager later told her mother about what transpired and a Police report was made. Hassana was arrested, charged and prosecuted. Prior to yesterday’s conviction, Hassana was out on bail pending the outcome of the trial.
