A post-mortem examination conducted on Monday found that 55-year-old miner Robert Nobel, known as “Curry,” died as a result of multiple injuries sustained during a violent assault at Honey Camp Landing in the Middle Mazaruni.
The examination was performed by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The cause of death was given as multiple injuries.
Nobel, of Albouystown, Georgetown, was killed following an attack that reportedly occurred between 5:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Honey Camp Landing.
Police reports indicate that the incident stemmed from allegations that the man had stolen items from residents in the area. Nobel, who was known to perform odd jobs around the community, was allegedly confronted by a group of men and subjected to a prolonged assault.
During the attack, he was reportedly dragged along the ground with a belt around his neck and struck multiple times with a spade, cutlasses and pieces of wood. An acidic substance was also allegedly thrown on him.
Following the assault, the injured man was left lying on the sand near an abandoned shop. He was later discovered motionless and pronounced dead.
An examination of the body revealed what appeared to be multiple abrasions and burn injuries.
The body has since been handed over to relatives for burial.
Several persons remain in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
