#CrownKya reps Guyana at Miss Caribbean Universe Pageant

Small in voice, but big in beauty, intelligence, and talent- Kya Bovell is competing for the coveted title of Miss Caribbean Universe in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands on Saturday.

Relatively new to the pageant scene, Kya is a budding model who has worked the runway in Guyana and, most recently went viral during her audition for the 2026 Origins Fashion Festival.

Though her poise and infectious personality are captivating, Kya will also draw on her experience as an educator at the University of Guyana and her experience as a medical imaging technologist to raise epilepsy awareness as she seeks to seize the coveted crown.

The 25-year-old told this publication that the title will provide her with an influential platform to remove common stigmas associated with epilepsy through education.

She stated that since epilepsy is a neurological condition that results in involuntary movement while in an unconscious state, many Guyanese have misconceived perceptions about the disorder.

Some of these misconceptions include the belief that a person experiencing a seizure should be held down or have an object, such as a ruler, placed in their mouth to prevent them from swallowing their tongue. These and other myths can be harmful and contribute to the stigma surrounding epilepsy.

She says, that with heightened awareness, lives can be saved as a spotlight is cast on signs of the condition and tips for the care of people who may be epileptic.

When she is not working on public health projects related to children living with disabilities, and pregnant women living with HIV, Kya finds joy in the creative arts, painting, crocheting, journaling, traveling, and spending quality time with her nieces, nephews, and siblings.

The #CrownKya campaign, as her supporters call it, continues as Kya Bovell represents Guyana at the Miss Caribbean Universe pageant on Saturday, June 13, when she vies for the crown in a competition against delegates from Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
