Police are hunting for a man and his accomplice who on Tuesday night discharged a handgun at a farmer who refused to sell them eggs. The incident occurred at Swan Village, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a statement related that the 64-year-old farmer also owns a small-scale chicken farm and a mini grocery shop which is located at his residence.

The man told investigators that he closed his shop at about 19:30h and ventured into his kitchen to prepare his meal when he heard someone calling for him. He then went outside and saw two men, one of whom inquired about purchasing eggs.

The farmer told the men that his shop was already closed, but the perpetrators pleaded with him to sell them. After insisting that his shop was closed, the perpetrators became annoyed and one of them allegedly withdrew a handgun from the waist of his pants and pointed same in the farmer’s direction and discharged a single round.

The farmer managed to avoid being shot and grabbed his licensed firearm (shotgun) and discharged a single round in their direction.

Police said the perpetrators then ran away in an unknown direction making good their escape.

Scene was visited by ranks of the Timehri Police Station on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at about 22:30 hrs.  The scene was canvassed by the said ranks and one twelve-gauge shell casing was recovered. Same was taken to the Timehri Police station where it was placed into an evidence bag, marked, sealed, and lodged. Checks were made but the perpetrators were not located.

Investigations are in progress.
