A 34-year-old fireman attached to the Lethem Fire Station has been fined a total of $150,000 after pleading guilty to a series of traffic offences committed in Central Lethem.

Thiago Rebeiro of Tabatinga, Central Rupununi, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on June 1, where he admitted to charges of refusing to consent to a breathalyser test, driving without a licence, breach of insurance, and dangerous driving.

The offences were committed on May 29 along the Tabatinga Public Road.

For refusing to take a breathalyser test, Rebeiro was fined $25,000 or, in default, two weeks’ imprisonment. He received an additional $25,000 fine or two weeks’ imprisonment for driving without a licence and another $25,000 fine or two weeks’ imprisonment for breach of insurance.

The most serious charge, dangerous driving, resulted in a fine of $75,000 or, in default, seven weeks’ imprisonment.

In total, Rebeiro was fined $150,000. Should he fail to pay the fines, he faces a combined default sentence of 13 weeks in prison.
