A parcel containing snacks destined for the Mazaruni Prison in Region Seven was intercepted after a nurse reportedly became suspicious of its contents and handed it over to police in Bartica.
According to police, the woman visited the Bartica Police Station at around 09:40 hrs with the package she had allegedly been asked to deliver to the prison. The nurse reportedly told investigators that the parcel had been given to her by a man, but she became concerned after detecting a strong scent resembling marijuana coming from it.
Police ranks subsequently opened the parcel in her presence and discovered 18 packs of assorted snacks, including Cheese Curls, Zoomers and Ripples.
However, further inspection reportedly revealed that several of the snack packets had been tampered with and stuffed with suspected cannabis, tobacco leaves and a pack of mints.
Investigators said the suspected cannabis weighed approximately 29.8 grams.
Police later attempted to locate the man who allegedly handed over the package, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
