Police ranks conducted a major cannabis eradication operation at De Veldt along the Upper Berbice River on Friday, March 20, 2026, resulting in the destruction of narcotics valued at more than $551 million.

The operation, took place between 05:00 hrs and 13:50 hrs. During the exercise, law enforcement officers discovered two cultivation fields spanning approximately seven acres.

According to reports, the fields contained an estimated 640,000 cannabis plants, ranging in height from four to ten feet.

Officers also uncovered a large drying area where approximately 850 pounds of dried cannabis were found.

All cannabis plants, along with the dried narcotics and the drying facility, were destroyed by fire at the scene.

Police confirmed that no arrests were made during the operation, which was carried out without incident.

Authorities have since launched further investigations into the discovery.
