CANU targets drug threat in Corentyne schools

February 11, 2026
The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has launched a series of targeted drug awareness and sensitisation sessions across Region Six, responding to growing concerns from school administrators about emerging drug trends that may appeal to teenagers.
According to a statement from the agency, the outreach initiative, focused on the Corentyne area in Berbice, forms part of CANU’s national prevention strategy aimed at protecting young people from the dangers of illicit substances, including cannabis derivatives, cocaine, ecstasy, and synthetic drugs.
As part of the programme, CANU officers conducted sessions at several educational institutions, including Crabwood Creek Primary, Skeldon Line Path Secondary, Skeldon High School, and Skeldon Primary School.
During the engagements, students were educated on the health and legal consequences of drug use and possession, the risks associated with edibles, vaping, and synthetic substances, and strategies for resisting peer pressure.
Officers also highlighted early warning signs of drug involvement and provided guidance on how students can safely report concerns.
Head teachers across the district have raised alarm over increasing experimentation among adolescents and formally requested CANU’s support to strengthen awareness and prevention within their school communities.
CANU has welcomed these requests, describing them as proactive steps toward safeguarding students and reinforcing protective school environments.
Beyond the classroom, CANU has expanded its outreach into surrounding Corentyne communities, engaging residents and parents through informal discussions, distributing drug awareness materials, and offering guidance on recognizing signs of drug activity.
Community members are also being informed about confidential reporting channels for suspicious activity.
CANU emphasized that community intelligence remains a key tool in disrupting drug networks and protecting vulnerable populations, urging residents to remain vigilant and actively support prevention efforts.
The Unit reaffirmed its commitment to reducing both the supply of and demand for illicit drugs through enforcement, education, and early-warning initiatives, stressing that protecting young people remains a national priority. CANU also underscored the importance of collaboration among schools, parents, and law enforcement in addressing emerging drug threats.
