Police are investigating a bus driver who was taken into custody following the alleged discovery of intoxicating liquor in a minibus transporting school-aged children along the Essequibo Coast.

The incident occurred around 13:30 hrs on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, during a traffic enforcement exercise along the Lima Public Road. Ranks observed a minibus parked on the eastern side of the roadway with approximately 20 school-aged passengers inside.

Upon approaching the vehicle, police reportedly noticed what appeared to be alcoholic beverages within the bus. The driver was instructed to proceed to the Anna Regina Police Station, where the vehicle was searched in the presence of relevant authorities.

Several bottles suspected to contain alcoholic beverages, along with other items, were discovered during the search. The students were subsequently handed over to a Child Care Officer for further assessment and intervention.

The driver was arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue. The minibus has been lodged pending the outcome of the probe.
